A confined space also has limited or restricted means for entry or exit and is not designed for continuous occupancy. Confined spaces include, but are not limited to, tanks, vessels, silos, storage bins, hoppers, vaults, pits, manholes, tunnels, equipment housings, ductwork, pipelines, etc In order for a work area to be defined as a "confined space," it must meet all three of the following criteria:

1. Limited Openings for Entry and Exit
2. The space is not intended for continuous human occupancy.
3. The area is large enough for you to enter and work in.
4. Chimneys and deep excavations are two examples.

What are confined space hazards?

Means an environment that may expose employees to the risk of death, incapacitation,  impairment of ability to self-rescue, injury, or acute illness.

The objectives of this procedure are to establish a written programme outlining general guidelines governing confined space and permit-required confined space entry.
